[...] AboutUs - In one of those weird small-world coincidences, I was sitting next to Ray King, founder of SnapNames and the new AboutUs at one of the sessions and - because of the LyricWiki.org shirt I was wearing - he asked me if I was the one who wrote the review of WetPaint. Awesome! People actually read my blog! Traffic is relatively low on my blog compared to several of my other sites, but now I’ve recieved comments from the people who created WetPaint, AboutUs, and (the code for) Atlassian Confluence. That feels rather fulfilling. Making the small-world coincidence even stranger is that I had just been to AboutUs a few days earlier even though it is just now making a major (still beta) launch. AboutUs is basically a whois site taken to the next level and then made into a wiki to boot. Personally I think it’s pretty cool, you might want to check it out also if you’re into domains. Tags: Wikimania2006, LyricWiki.org, AboutUs, Con [...]

Charles:

I agree, competition is going to do some good things for the market. I think a lack of competition early on is what lulled some of the early open source (and free) projects into their current states which created an opening for commercial products to do some interesting things.

Sorry about the Bubble 2.0 comment. I view the bubble as a time-period, and every developer with a webapp is in it at the moment (<a href='http://www.projectories.com' rel="nofollow">myself included</a>). I confess that you are right, however, I didn't research each wiki in equal depth. This article is meant to be taken more as a Wetpaint review not a comparison of all wiki apps.

That being said, I still think Wetpaint won't be stopped from becoming th dominant design by Atlassian since the vast majority of organizations do not have the $1,200 for a team-level Confluence account. That's not to say that Atlassian will go out of business any time soon, but they'll most likely be serving a much smaller market segment of larger businesses. You don't need much volume when you have margins like that though!

(Lead developer of Atlassian Confluence here.)

Interesting write-up: WetPaint definitely has a lot of things going for it. The wiki market is a fun place to be right now, and the more smart people who are active in it, the more interesting places it's going to be pushed.

I take umbrage at getting stamped with the 'Bubble 2.0' label, though. It's a cheap shot, and shows a certain lack of research. (We're also not a hosted app, although you can buy hosted Confluence services from third parties).

Thanks so much for the kind words and feedback! We appreciate the feedback we get from everyone and use it to plan what's next for Wetpaint, so it definitely makes a difference to hear what's on your mind! --Ben
